How can I tell if a coin has an error or if it is just scratched/damaged? I'm afraid to let a single coin go #128518;

scratches dig into a coin's surface, perhaps pushing some metal up along their edge, like drawing in sand with a stick

most, but not all, errors exhibit differences from such scratches

Error-Coin-Vs-Scratch

This is a 1990 D. To me it looks like doubling on liberty but I wonder if it's just scratched.

With a scratch, you should see pushed up and displaced metal. As for the the picture you uploaded, it looks normal to me. I am not seeing any doubling.

Your photo is blurry, maybe DDD but not a doubled die. There are many types of doubling we all need to learn, here is a good link to bookmark and study:https://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles...Doubling.htm

the example is a form of die wear. we call this type DDD - or Die Deterioration Doubling
There are far more ways to damage a coin than there are to just mint one.
Do a search on how coins are made and you can get some insight on what to look for.
