I had a procedure on my L4-L5 nerve bundle (out-patient) in an attempt to ease the extreme pain I have been in since Feb. To start they took my blood pressure: 162 over 120 with a pulse at 82 second reading 5 minutes later: 159/118 pulse at 80 we did the procedure and I had to wait 30 minutes before I could walk out on my own power. (yes, with another BP: 148/92 I drove myself home (have nobody available to help me much anymore - poor me right? ) hours later I took my BP again: 145/86 pulse 72 I'm BP management medicine and I did take it before when I got up. EDIT: my usual BP hovers around 120/79 with a pulse of 65 ..and to top it off I only managed 25 posts so far today - a far cry from my daily 40-50.. At least I have not pain at the moment - Doc said it would be the local they used to numb me up to my spinal tap. But I feel like crap- headache, flush/warm in the face, and a teensy bit dizzy. Lets see how I feel tomorrow.. To all you YOUNG FOLK out there, TAKE CARE OF YOUR BACK NOW! or you will suffer the mistakes of your elders.

That ship has sailed, I screwed mine up skiing 4 or 5 years ago, went to the chiropractor an it was fine for a year+ (I think) and then I was lifting a heavy label printer thing and it has been off ever since. I see problems in the future. Get well!

Dearborn, I won't go into the details of how my future ex-wife induced my initial back injury with her overloaded suitcase on a trip overseas. But the first rupture came a few years later as I bent at the hip to dump bacon grease into a pan for the raccoons outside. The second rupture happened when I once again bent at the hips to pick up a letter from the IRS from the coffee table. Do look up McKenzie Method and the book "Treat Your Own Back". And I wish you the best, as I went through 8 years of absolute misery with L4/5 issues.

My sister had terrible back problems before she turned 40. Lower back, one disc was shot and the next one was going. Doctors kept telling her that fusion was the only available answer, but she found a better surgeon. She had a new surgery where they go in through the front, push the organs aside, pull the discs, and hammer these little wedges into place as spacers. She is like 90% recovered. Went from barely able to stand and walk, all the way to hiking, swimming, carrying normal stuff.
Keep at it, and if the first docs give you a shady opinion, do not be afraid to get a second, third, fourth opinion.

Hey John, an old Leprechaun told me that if you tape Silver and Gold coins along your spine, you will feel just fine! Hopefully tomorrow you feel much better!

Take care, John. I had a herniated disc there 35 years ago, so I really feel your pain!

thanks everyone - After 10 hours in bed I feel a little better my BP is now 121/74 - pulse at 90 though don't know why my heart is racing... And the above reading is before my medication. So I'll recheck in about 2 hours to see if the meds indeed do anything...

@Dearborn.... Sorry to hear about your back issues, I know first hand just how excruciatingly painful it can be. About 30 years ago, while working construction I ended up w/ an L5-S1 disc herniation. Fast forward to my last MRI taken roughly 3 weeks ago, shows nerve root compression on both left & right sides of the spinal column (the left is way worse), stenosis & a ton of arthritis. Most days I'm in 7 out of 10 pain (which is normal for me) but sometimes when my back goes out, I'm in 10 out of 10 pain. Meaning, I cannot stand up straight, have to use a cane to redistribute my upper torso weight to one of my arms & hobble around like I'm 90 years old, haha. Over they years/decades, due to taking too much Ibuprofen, caused lesions in my stomach, so now I am required to take Omeprazole aka Prilosec every time I take pain meds (which is daily). Routine epidural/steroidal injections are no longer effective for my back pain, so my orthopedic Dr. wants me to have a Facet nerve-block procedure in the next week or two. Hopefully it works because if it doesn't, surgery is my last option.
I wish you well with your back pain because back pain sucks, haha.

BTW... having elevated blood pressure is completely normal when experiencing an abundance of pain.

So after a few hours of taking my meds, my BP is 101/66 pulse 70 Quote: Sorry to hear about your back issues, I know first hand just how excruciatingly painful it can be. Most days I'm in 7 out of 10 pain (which is normal for me) but sometimes when my back goes out, I'm in 10 out of 10 pain I completely agree with you there. I too work construction (still do) and my x-rays and MRI show bulging discs at L3/L4 to L5/S1 and a left side tear at L4/5. my best days are at a 5 (normal) up to a 10 when working. The nerve at L4/L5 are really angry and I feel it all the way down to my ankle with my knee giving out, causing a near fall. But the injection yesterday helped the pain, Now I'm able to get in the stretches I need to get things stronger and moving again. Quote: BTW... having elevated blood pressure is completely normal when experiencing an abundance of pain. Oh yeah, I'm well aware of that. too - Every time I go to the VA it is for my pain in my back, (giving high readings (usually around 140/85) which aint't too bad, but makes the VA think I have a pressure issue - one I don't think I do (when I'm pain free) But the VA knows better, right? So the VA sent me 2 BP measuring devices to me at home - one that is mine and one I have to use to make daily measurements that automatically sends days to my care nurse for a few months to monitor the new meds I just started. Which is why I took my BP twice today (before and after the pill) Both show normal when my pain lever is low and my migraines are not active.

I'm happy to hear the pain has been relieved by the procedure, and that your BP is settling down.
