Hey,

I'm graduating from high school this year along with my good friend. He's going off to West Point so I thought it would be a good idea to get him a American Silver Eagles from West Point.

I was on the mint's website and it said they need to gather enough silver first or something. Does anyone Know any more on this? and how long it is going to take?

Thanks,
Sean

Sean;
From what I know the Mint has had trouble getting supplies of silver coin blanks, and have only been keeping up with demand on the Eagles minted in Philadelphia. The proofs that were usually out the first of the year, are not available yet, and I don't know if they, or the ones from West Point will ever be.
Hope this helps.

Sean;
I assume this is what you saw on the Mint's Web Site.

Whoa! West Point?! Congrats to him!

The last time the mint ran out of blanks in 2008, it was ... I think 2 to 4 months before they started producing them again.

None of the Silver Eagles are minted in Philadelphia, they are all currently minted at West Point- this includes gold, silver and platinum. The bullion Eagles are minted without the W mint mark but the proof and burnished uncirculated strikes do carry the W mint mark. Unfortunately, the only 2009s that have been released is the bullion version.

An alternative would be the 2002 West Point Bicentennial commemorative silver $1, there are a few on ebay right now with BINs around $25.

Congrats to your friend on West Point acceptance, I consider that a higher honor than getting accepted to Harvard or MIT
