Found thus in a roll of quarters from my bank. From my research, I am gathering this is a strike through? Also seeing some copper poking through so maybe some PMD to the clad layer? Still new... any additional information would be great. Also wondering if it's worth grading?

Edit: found out that I have to take a screen shot of my picture to get it to work on this site... I put the sally ride on there for option on if I should send both for grading. As stated before, I had issues with my pictures so I apologize.

Edit 2: removed Sally Ride

Why the Sally quarters here if you are asking about the Rushmore quarter?
Can you post a better image of the Rushmore quarter? from straight down, not a a long low angle?

I see staining on the Rushmore quarter and a Struck Through error on the Sally Ride quarter.

I uploaded more pictures. It's definitely more than just "staining" on the Rushmore quarter. It's definitely indented.

Well to begin with your coin is off center on 2 different axis'
Obverse off to the North/West
and the
reverse is off center due East.
Which is very odd all by itself.
There is other stuff going on could be staining on the lower areas of the design elements.
Can you get us a close up of the Motto? at the edge by the "E.PLURIBUS" area. but concentrate on the E.PLU zone the most.

Do me a favor and try an acetone soak on this coin - overnight if you please. But be sure to use ONLY pure acetone - not fingernail polish remover, Nail remover stuff can ruin a coin quickly, Pure acetone has nothing in it that will add to the issues your coin has - it may even make it look better and easier to troubleshoot.
After the soak, please come back to this topic and add report your findings, you can add new images in your new posts - no need to edit your first one to get hte new images posted.

Quick question though, that just occurred to me - the "indented area" you stated, are you referring to the areas near the rims? or where it is discolored?

oh, and re-reading your initial post (better) I just noticed that you asked about that Sally Ride coin too - can you do me a favor and remove it from this topic and make a new one just for that coin, so we
1. don't forget about it, and
2. don't get confused as to which coin we are discussing.

(Pretty please?)

Here is a close up of the motto as requested. Also provided an additional close up of the area in question which is in between the nose and eye on the closest face. Also appears to be behind the guy working. I have already soaked this in acetone for a few minutes and gently rubbed it with a fluffed Q tip. I will definitely try to do an over night soak. And yes, I have pure acetone. Thank you all for your replies already. Hope to get to the bottom of this!

to the CCF I'm most interested in the reverse from 8:00 to 10:00. It looks like copper on top of the clad layer. Can we get a in focus up close picture of that area? All the rest is a stain of some sorts.

Ok. So here is after a 10 hour soak in acetone and a gentle rub with a fluffed up Q tip. I'm trying to include all requested photos. I definitely misspoke at first calling it a die clash. I think its a strike through maybe? Had several people on Facebook tell me this is a completely normal quarter with some staining... I've personally never seen (what I've come to call a valley) on another Rushmore quarter. Yes, it's definitely got some staining that helps define the features of the valley, but I've never seen something quite like this. I will happily provide more photos if requested. I do have a microscope, but its not specifically ment for coins, so it's minimum magnification is still pretty significant.

Oh. Weight is 5.7g

All your help is greatly appreciated!!

New2coinz,

My vote is environmental staining/damage of some sort not an error.

Thanks for the additional images, I'll have to wait until I get home to have a real good look at them though..
