Hello Everyone! I hope that your evening is enjoyable... here is an 1865 Plain 5 Two Cent Piece. What is the line at the bottom of 5's bowl, and at the upper inside as well (it's not a continuation of the whitish scrape seen to the right-above that)? The bottom line can't be a remnant of a repunched 5, for obvious reasons. Any ideas or comments are greatly appreciated!

Nice "woody!"

That spot on the obverse needs attention sooner rather than later.

This looks like a "plain 5."

As to the artifact in the 5, I suspect it is repunching (RPD) and not an overdate.

Westcoin is the expert here on this series and will be able to contribute more.

This coin has the broken upper serif on the "D" in UNITED; there are also some 1865's with an intact upper serif on the D.

Thanks. Paralyse. I tried to reconcile it to a repunch, but no go. Fancy 5, no problem. Plus, there seems to be a bar under the bottom of the upper inside bowl. It's coming fresh from Europe...

Here's why I don't think it's a Repunched 5

I dug out my Kevin Flynn book "Getting Your Two Cents Worth".
I agree with paralyse.
I see it as an RPD.

it is a marker for the RPD. Definitely a plain 5. The full top serif on the D of United for the plain 5 is not as rare as on the "Fancy 5" This example is known as a "Partial D"

I believe this is the Kevin Flynn RPD-003 or (older book ID) KF-P7-TPD - it is a triple punched date. There are at least 13 repunched dates of the plain 5 variety.
