From 1951 to 1978 it was generally struck in cupro-nickel, with a few issues in stainless steel. By the late 1970s the coin had become virtually worthless due to inflation, The metal was changed to brass for the 1979 issue, and this was destined to be the last issue of all. Silver coins minted in 1953 host a slogan "Cincuentenario" celebrating the 50th anniversary of the country. They are also the first Panamanian coins minted by the Mexican mint.
