In 1940, Panama minted only two coins. One of them was this one-year type (and sole representative of it's denomination). It is a 1.25 cent coin, or half of a 2.5 cent coin. Panama had been minting 2.5 cent coins irregularly since 1904, but in 1940 decided to issue a coin with the value of half a 2.5 cent coin. Panamanians called it a "cuartillo" for the extra quarter cent of value it had over a penny. It became a popular coin and was widely used for years afterward to buy tiny parcels of salt, rice, sweets, etc.
