I certainly hope that this is not bogus. I've been interested in Spanish colonial coins for 50 years, when my dad gave me an 1809 8 reales. About 25 years ago I became interested in the Morelos SUD issues, yet a TC remained elusive. I recently picked one up, although it's not in the best condition.
20.67 g; 40 mm average diameter.
My literature on these is rather limited - the Lyman Haynes Low reprint and the brief mention in Utberg and Vogt.
Your opinion on its authenticity, and suggestions for other literature would be greatly appreciated.

Nice coin! For more reading, there is an outstanding article on TC Sud pieces in the most recent USMEX journal.

Thank you, threefifty! Is it available online or hardcopy/subscription only?

Looks real to me. I have one and it's quite a bit sharper. I suppose someone might forge these, but they're pretty abundant.

Found a Zacatecas provisional yet? They make your Morelos look like it's uncirculated. I saw a typical one on ebay a couple days ago with a good bit of the lettering, but no date.

Hondo - I think an online subscription is about $35/year at usmex.org. Well worth it!

Yeah that's pretty typical. It's nice to at least have the date, but the one I saw did have a lot of Zacatecas and Provisional. The better ones have Fernando's head, and usually it's a pretty grotesque caricature. The best ones have the mountain and LVO, but the're pretty scarce these days. Here's a great thread on those from 10 years ago.

I've really gotten into the War for Independence issues over the past couple years. The Zacatecas provisional armored/draped bust issues are great. I don't know if it's me being contrary to those who are into MS70 modern slabbed coins but I do love a nice barely identifiable copper SUD or silver slug from Durango/Zacatecas/etc.

threefifty, about 20 years ago I picked up a collection of SUDs from someone who was liquidating their assets. Several 8 reales plus many 2, 1 and 1/2 reales - at least thirty or more in all (I haven't counted). Then my focus shifted, but after all these years I'm getting interested in this area again. Seems like the prices have gone crazy! I'll be keeping my eye open for Zacatecas and provisionals.

Picked up another Morelos SUD 8 reales TC. In slightly better condition than my other one, and at a lower price!

If you like those, you'll love French Revolutionary sols

The metal varies with the church bells they melted to get the metal. The inscribed slab looks like a tombstone. Major planchet flaws are the rule.

thq, now you're using my French heritage to induce me into an entirely new avenue of expenditures. Not fair!
