Hi all,

I have the opportunity to buy this token:

1933-World's-Fair/Century-Of-Progress-Hoover-Exhibit-Token---Grime?

1933-World's-Fair/Century-Of-Progress-Hoover-Exhibit-Token---Grime?

I'm really excited about it, since it appears to be a pocket piece - it's not a coin, so the wear can't have come from circulation. This would go great with another worn 1933 Fair token that I have.

I am wondering - can anyone take a guess at what the crud by the devices is? It looks like just grime, in which case I can probably get it off with acetone. Would that make sense? Or is this some kind of corrosion that has ruined the piece. I tend to think not, since it looks like it's been wiped/worn off except around the raised portions.

What say you all?

The blackening is mostly grime which may or may not be removed by acetone.
In either case, you shouldn't spend more that $5 for this, as it is one of the most common tokens from that exposition.

I can relate to the appeal of a pocket piece token - I have a Pan-Pacific Montana Fund so called dollar in likely AG03 grade. Like this piece it had to be carried in someones pocket for a long time to get there.

I don't believe this is corrosion, but possible that not all can be removed with acetone. If it's a fair price I say go for it.

I would be careful with acetone, it would remove any finish applied to the medal when it was new. The finish on medals is typically different vs. circulation coins.

I would start with some distilled water and a wet cotton swab. Gently push the swab at the sites of concern - the grime might come off easily.
