I am looking for a nice Peace dollar for my collection. I have a really sweet Morgan. I don't really know a whole lot about Peace dollars so I'm not sure what they are really worth. The local coin shop is selling several from the 1920's for around $17-$20. They are in nice shape and I was wondering if this is a fair price and if any one is a better deal than the other. He has a pretty good selection...too many to list. Just wondering if anyone can help?

With silver around $13.00 I would say if you can pick up an high AU or BU Peace dollar in that price range it's a good deal. Junk coin just to fill a hole, no more than melt.

a collectible coin grade AU-BU is going to go up in value over time
poor graded(scrap)common dates will not appreciate beyond melt prices
bottom line ---- it's worth paying a little extra for well graded coins!

The shop I work at has a box of AU Peace dollars for 18 dollars each. The vast majority of them are 22 and 23 dated coins. If you have your choice and are only getting one, I would go for just about any other date than those two, or any date with a Mint Mark for right around 18-20 dollars. We sell F-XF coins out of a box for 16 dollars, more variety in there, but less condition.

Worth the time to look through them if there are alot , some of the bigger die breaks on the Peace Series command real good premiums and you can cherry-pick them.

The cheapest any coin shop around here sells common circulated Peace dollars would be at $14 (well circulated, cleaned, nicks, etc) on the low end to $16 on the high end (may get as nice as EF). AU ones probably looking at $16 and up around here.

Someone mentioned buying junk ones at no more than melt. I would love to find some at melt since not a single shop that I know of sells even problems ones anywhere near melt...at least in this area and the Milwaukee area. Junk silver doesn't sell for melt either.

One place I go to has a small box of these for $17 each. Last time I went through it I found a 1928-S in F-15 light cleaned condition. One of the less common dates so I felt that was a reasonable price. For the ones in 1922 or 1923, I would want it to be an AU for $17 though.

Check the dates, if they are common, and they're not at least au-55, leane them. I can pick up commons for 20 bucks uncirculated.
