Just under 5/8" and very dirty - but I'm hoping the raised pattern shows enough. Been poking around but the ancient coins are all "Greek to me"! No clue so far. Bronze maybe? Appears to be a palm tree with 2 coconuts on one side, and sheaf of wheat on other side - along with lettering and dotted edge. Interesting little bugger. No clue - thank you to anyone who can guide me.

Oh yeah - that's it! Thank you kindly Novicius. I am wondering if some kind of cleaning (such as an acetone bath) would improve the encrusted hidden detail on mine? Or is that a taboo for these types? Also, please clue me in if these are at all desirable or valuable. Much appreciated!

@canu, I'm a little suspicious of the porous surface on this piece. Can you please give us an accurate weight? The diameter seems right though so maybe my concern is unfounded. Also, can you please give us a little more info about where you got this coin? ebay or elsewhere? Thx.

Hi Spence - thanks for taking a gander. This coin weighs 2 grams on my digital scale. Not ebay - I just don't have any education on these ancients and ebay would be the LAST place I would risk buying as a complete novice. This coin and the other ancient I also posted today were bought at an old etsate sale at least 10-12 years ago. Came in a little box of other old goodies - assorted medals/tokens - old political campaign pin backs - a few beat to heck american coins...and a few mysteries.

Ok thx for following up with that information. The weight seems about right. The coins of Judea are not my primary area of collecting interest, so I might be wrong on this one. Hopefully, we will get some broader participation from folks who know better than I do over the next few days.

Appreciate your effort Spence! Hope to learn a bit more. Looking at this coin with a 10x loupe has me hopeful that under this strange black encrustation some nice detail could still be remaining. I can faintly see the fine 'side hairs' on the grain head lurking under the surface gook. Almost looks like it may be some sort of charcoal-like residue - like it was in or near something burning. Just a wild thought maybe?
