Hello! I was looking through some of my quarters and I found 2 Barber quarters, the Quarter in question (1898) is thinner and lighter than the other. It weighs 5.5 grams instead of the appx 6.3 grams that it should and doesn't appear to have been reeded fully or could just be faded. Could it be possible that this was struck on the wrong planchet or perhaps missing the copper? Perhaps its worth looking into?

Thanks!

Seems like a well-circulated slick with a bit of PMD on top.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I agree with Hondo Boguss. Just a heavily circulated Barber quarter with PMD.

to the CCF!

To learn about any term that is defined by CCF, click on the blue, underlined word. Like this ----> PMD stands for Post Mint Damage. The missing reeds may have been shaved off or simply wore away over the years.

As for 'missing' copper, these were struck on 90% silver planchets, so there is no copper layer at the center. The mints started using copper-nickel clad planchets for circulation strikes in 1965.

Guessing wear accounts for the weight loss.

Looks like you got plenty of great answers here, it is a nice quarter (not a clad one like the modern ones) but very worn down from use.

Does it "ring"? The one spot on the rim looks like it could possibly be a casting sprue.
