Just got back from the bank and scored some old rolled coin. All rolls weigh 155(+). Can anyone date the (Watertown, WI) faded red wrappers?

Thanks.

It can be a bit tricky trying to date wrappers. Not so difficult to distinguish old/used wrappers from fresh ones. The challenge is to differentiate somewhat old from pretty old. Some people specialize in salvaging and 'recycling' wrappers--they can be found on ebay where others will buy them, then fill them with coins. Too, some people--older generation usually--save used wrappers for future use--could be a wrapper from the late '70s filled with shield cents. I had that happen to me last year--a beat up, bright red wrapper with 1977 hand-written on the side.

Out of curiosity, what do the enders look to be on the rolls you have photos of?

So curiosity got the best of me and I opened one of the three red wrappers. These are taped with Scotch Tape, clearly old tape and not tampered with..... Newest coin in the roll is a 1974 and the oldest is 1959. No wheaties... One nice double clash reverse and a few coins with die chips and cracks. No other coin of any real significance. From the looks of it I'm fairly certain the roll was sealed in 1974.

Why didn't I ask for all the "old rolls" from the very attractive teller yesterday?!?

Went back today and asked if she had any of the old rolls left...... She said I got there too late someone was in and needed some rolled coin and she gave him all of them. My heart sunk..... I asked for an exchange of $15 in rolled pennies. She went into the vault, came back and said "Oh, my bad, there were a few more".......

I was like OMG!

She said one of our elderly customers died recently and his son found these in the basement......

haven't seen those one-size-for-all-denominations wrappers for a long time, they were around before the 1970s

They are amazing! However, the coins were not kept in a dry environment. Some have a form mildew. Only checked half of one roll so far and dates range 1971 to 1944. A few coins in and a naked eye RPM jumps out. 1959-D 1¢ WRPM-002. Top 100 RPM on Wexler's list. Clearly a triple re-punch.

I'm pretty sure there will be more to come.

The keepers might need an acetone bath.

Actually, with MWRs, it ALWAYS does mean old coins (as long as the wrappers are untampered with) - it's just a matter of how old the old coins inside are. My 47 roll haul of dimes from a couple years ago (with 9 of the rolls being all silver) being the best illustration of this as not a single coin was dated after 1976. One of the rolls of silver dimes had no dime dated after 1963...

Of course, with CWR, it is always hit or miss with the old wrappers in terms of them having old coins.

I've had very good luck with a certain very attractive teller the past several months - see my posts since April in the Nickel thread.

My rule of thumb with old style rolls when you see them is to take them all on the spot if you have the finances available... ask about other denominations while you're there (rather than just your target) as well. You never know when an old hoard including all denominations has been dumped.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
