I read in an old thread http://goccf.com/t/355576&whichpage=1 in which a forum member was able to start filling their Whitman 20th and 21st Century US Type Album by using a couple of mint sets: Quote: majority of coins came from 2 mint sets 1967 Proof set and 1999 Uncirculated set (actually 3 as I forgot that Sacagawea only came out in 2000 and I had removed the NJ quarter from 1999). The forum member also seemed to suggest that proofs be used to fill other types in the album. I am really not understanding how those two mint sets would give a "majority of coins", or if using proofs for other coin types is an appropriate strategy for such a type set. I am not questioning the approach of the forum member, but as a novice to coin collecting I am simply seeking to understand the hobby and to have a thoughtful approach to collecting a US Type Set. Thank you.

A big project, especially if you wish to complete such a collection with higher grade coins. Start off by opportunistically acquiring good value for money representative coins in a random way. Bargains should be easier to find that way. Do your price research first, before committing to the purchase of every coin. You will learn a lot about US coinage history along the way.

Aurelius, I don't know what your birth year is but a proof set for that will fill some holes. Secondly A 1964 proof or mint set will satisfy filling some modern silver holes. I also opted for the silver bicentennial 3 piece set to fill those holes. That would be a good start, all in either unc or proof for not much money at all. As your holes begin to fill with quality coins, it will give you the incentive to seek out the best examples you can find to fill the remaining holes.

That's a really nice folder! I'm the poster that was referenced in the link. I used the mint sets to fill the album with some uncirculated coins. I did consider going high grade but I did that set in slabbed. Link: https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/co...sets/305403/

Thanks for the kind comments folks. There are a few coins I'd like to upgrade. Notably the Merc dime, Liberty and Buffalo nickels and the Indian and Lincoln wheat cents, but for now I'll consider what is there as hole fillers. I always find myself more interested in collecting the earliest coinage rather than trying to upgrade existing modern coinage.

Oh wow! What a fantastic response to my post! I am really inspired by the photos and the advice. I feel I can enjoy the collecting and learning of this hobby with the Whitman and the advice given in this thread. I had initially planned on using the Dansco type set, but seeing the price of some of those early coins gave me anxiety.
I have a fair number of coins already to make a good start on the Whitman album. One day I hope to post photos of my completed album!
