I tossed in a low-ball bid for this coin and ended up winning it.

Definitely not flashy, but it's a solid EDS example, I think. What say you?

Agree low AU. Nice example if you like darker coins.

It's a beauty, pristine. Nothing at all wrong with a dark coin.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

AU-55 by me. Wouldn't this be an LDS with all that stretching? .. especially on the reverse.

Good point ... but at the same time, I'd read that LDS coins of this date reflect die wear at "pluribus", and it's crisp here. Must be more to it all than I understand.

AU-50. Late die state and early die state terms are relative and different with each die pairing.
Suffering from bust half fever.

Everyone right, more or less. Frankly I was surprised that any completely luster-less coin could grade above AU-50. That said, I don't have the coin yet ...

not necessarily. luster is a component however not weighted as much as surface preservation. however, once you get to 55 there needs to be some luster hanging around and this one would be close to 55 if it was there.
