I recently found this in a friends old change we were going thru and it made me very curious about how or what would make a penny look like this . It almost feels like a blank planchette. Please let me know what you guys think

Just road rash after it left the mint. There is no way that a coin would leave the mint in this condition.

Just really bad damage. You can see the corner of the shield on one side, so no, definitely not a blank planchet. Not even a blank planchet that also got damaged.

Happy to help! When I got into collecting several years ago, one of the ways I learned was to just read every post on this forum and to see what the more experienced users had to say. Obviously, there are exceptions, and there are some users here who are particularly extraordinary (Mike Diamond, Tanman, and TropicalBats, for example), but as a general rule of thumb, you can expect anyone with over a thousand posts to probably have some idea of what they're talking about (of course, many experts will also just happen to be new to this forum, but people with a lot of posts are kinda like a verified twitter account). You can also usually tell pretty quickly from reading a response if a person is an expert. Anyway, highly recommend just reading the responses each coin gets and seeing why or why not each one is deemed an error/variety. You'll pick up a ton of information very quickly. Beyond that, error_ref, variety vista, Wexler's die varieties, and coppercoins are all essential resources for anyone interested in this hobby.

Agree, a rather extreme example of post-strike damage.

I agree, just severe damage. PMD. Probably was in a parking lot, and got run over.
