I just purchased this coin and don't have it in hand yet. I paid $15 for it and am anxious to see what is going on with that reverse (split after strike?). The fissure on obverse is pretty cool by itself. Anyways, I'll post a separate thread when I can get the photos taken. My question is about the 2x2 and if this indicates an old flip? I don't remember seeing Whitman flips stamped with the logo like this (reverse bottom left).

Interesting coin and 2X2, CoinHI. Looking forward to your updates once you have it in hand.

Very interesting coin, CoinHI. I started collecting in the late 1960's and had many of the old Whitman coin albums, but I don't recall ever running across Whitman-branded 2x2 holders. Of course, my memory isn't quite what it used to be...

Love your threads. We know it will be interesting and informative with great images. That reverse looks like it has no rims. And the overall appearance has me wondering if is a lamination or if the coin split after the strike. Quote: ... I haven't been collecting for quite that long (early 80's)... Yep, you're still a newby at only 40 years or so.

Ha! thanks P55! I have a feeling it is split after strike but we will see...
I'm curious what your opinion on that 2x2 is. Have you seen one like before?

That embossed world impression looks familiar though so maybe I have come across it. (I just noticed on yours that there is even a patent Number on it. Maybe there's a way to look up the dates from that?)

Yes, I will hopefully get a better look at that patent number when I get it.
I do think it is interesting that no one here has a firm recollection of coming across a 2x2 like this.

Update from the patent number. The patent was granted in 1965. The coin itself is unfortunately not split but instead there was some green colored corrosion taking place on the reverse. I'll post some photos later when get time.
