Hello,
I have a beautifully toned 1962 Proof nickel still sealed in the mint cellophane. It has three spots of what looks like verdigris. I think I need to remove it before the whole coin suffers. I'd like to treat or remove the spots but I'm not sure how. Any recommendations / advice that would help conserve the coin and not remove the beautiful toning? I know it's not worth more than face value at this point but I just really like it for my myself.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Sorry for the pics being blurry or reflective, I struggled with them still being in cellophane.

I'm afraid that it's a goner. Try an acetone soak and see what happens. If that doesn't do anything, carefully apply VerdiCare to the afflicted spots.

Will the acetone clear the toning? I don't want that, maybe I can spot treat it?

I can't assure you that acetone will not affect the toning - the experts will weigh in on that. But you can't "spot treat" with acetone because of it's low surface tension. Even VerdiCare would be a challenge, and it would most likely affect the toning. However, that's not something I've ever tried. Once again, we'll have to wait for the experts.

This one might be done for. I don't know if Verdi-Care is safe for proof coins or not.

Fairly certain VC is not suggested for proofs.

If Acetone does not help alone, try a Mineral Oil (non-additive food grade) soak first. It might penetrate the Verdigris enough to allow a follow-up Acetone soak to remove it. Mineral Oil should have no impact on the toning - you can leave it soaking for days. Optionally, I'd heat some distilled water, pour in a cup, and then use tongs to quickly dip the coin a few times to get off as much oil as possible before another round of Acetone.

If that fails, your options grow because the coin is essentially toast unless you attempt more agressive methods. Try a 1-2% Sodium Sesquicarbonate bath. Keep it short (hour or so) as these are Salts and WILL affect toning if over-exposed.
