This is the last in my current collection. However, I'm looking at the several themed to American Veterans if I can find them: 2010W American Veterans Disabled for Life (I'm not disabled, so you know), 1994W Vietnam Veterans (I am a Vet) and 1994W POW. The first one I found at a local antique mall for, I think, $29. Still thinking about it.
This commemorative was authorized under Public Law 108-290 and signed by President George W. Bush on August 6, 2004 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Chief Justice John Marshall in 1755. John Marshall served as the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme court from 1801 to 1835, the longest tenure of any Chief Justice in the Nation's history. He also was a Revolutionary War soldier, a member of Congress and served as Secretary of State under President John Adams.
Public Law 108-290 authorized the minting of uncirculated and proof coinage beginning January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2005. Also, a Coin and Chronicles Set was produced that included an uncirculated silver dollar, a booklet and a BEP (Bureau of Engraving and Printing) intaglio portrait. There was also an American Legacy set consisting of a Marine Corps and John Marshall Silver Dollars , and an 11-piece proof set.
Surcharges collected were to be paid to the Supreme Court Historical Society for the purpose of
"(1) supporting historical research and educational programs about the Supreme Court and the Constitution of the United States and related topics;
(2) supporting fellowship programs, internships, and docents at the Supreme Court; and
(3) collecting and preserving antiques, artifacts, and other historical items related to the Supreme Court and the Constitution of the United States and related topics."
