This commemorative was authorized by Public Law 108-291 and signed by President George W. Bush on August 6, 2004. This law enacted to commemorate the 230th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps and to support the construction of the
Marine Corps Heritage Center. Per the law "The purpose of the center is to provide a multipurpose facility to be used for historical displays for the public viewing, curation, and storage of artifacts, research facilities, classrooms, offices and associated activities, consistent with the mission of the Marine Corps."
The Center (Located in Triangle, VA) is the home of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and is a multi-use 135 acre campus. Contruction of the Center began in 2004 and was scheduled to open November 10, 2005. Why that date, one might ask. Well, the Continental Marines was founded to conduct ship-to-ship fighting, provide security/discipline enforcement and assist landing forces on November 10, 1775.
Public Law 108-291 authorized the issuance of uncirculated and proof quality silver dollars. Issuance was permitted for a one year period beginning January 1, 2005. Surcharges collected were to be paid to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.
In addition to the uncirculated and proof coinage, the mint produced a Coin and Stamp set consisting of an uncirculated silver dollar and a themed 3 postage stamp. There was also an American Legacy set consisting of a Marine Corps and John Marshall Silver Dollars , and an 11-piece proof set.
