As I'm now limited to $500 a month by spousal edict, I've been on the hunt for desirable lower-grade pieces in my favorite series. I love the early halves. This one seems to fit the bill, though I wish it wasn't quite so dark. I don't have the coin yet, but it should be pretty obvious which scratches are on the slab. I paid (price redacted until grade reveal). What say you?

A bit dark for my taste and the reverse discoloration would bother me.

The big stain on the back would keep me away

Center is weak, especially the hair of Liberty, but it makes VF20.

There's nothing wrong with saving your allowance for a month or two and getting a real beauty.

Doesn't matter much if you are in the hunt for lower grade coins or higher grade coins. What does matter is that you are in the hunt for the best coin for the money. That has been my approach throughout most of my numismatic life. Because I like to study the background behind each coin in my collection, the coin type is important, and that has very little to do with it's condition. For me, it has to be a an interesting coin, and it's value is determined by the combination of rarity and condition balanced against it's price at the time of purchase. Thus, I have a few coins in my collection valued at $thousands, but the vast majority of coins in my collection would have a value of less than $50. It is very possible to build a large and interesting collection of US coinage at a purchase price of less than $50 each, that has lots of high grade, and some scarce lower grade coins in it.

Ouch, that hurts. Spousal restrictions sound painful. I shall choose my bird wisely then.
VF-20. Definitely a lot of wear on this guy but choice, problem free surfaces for the grade make it appealing.

The dark surfaces and reverse stain are not appealing to my eye.
I suggest a grade in the F15 range.

Nice coin. The black on the reverse is a little distracting but she's still a beauty.

this series is a pain in the butt to grade you need to be darn good to accurately grade them due to strike issues. I have always been higher than the TPG's on them. in the past I've credited the coin for the sharpness of the higher devices. for example, looking at this coin I see a stronger drape, stars and date and sharper lettering on the reverse. i'll call this one obv VF25, reverse F15. i'll net it to VF20. I don't mind the darker surfaces.

$372. I thought it a rather striking example for the grade, if a little dark.

Seems better than the holdered grade.

proves my point that PCG doesn't know how to grade these. there is no way this coin is VG. it appears they don't take any strike issues into consideration. I have no idea what these people look at to grade these. heres the VG photograde. not even close people. i'd buy this coin at VG10 all day, crack it out and resell it.
