how do you guys get boxes of coins from the bank? I tried to get rolls today.. I had to go to 2 banks the first said they were supposed to give out rolls if you dont have an account with them. Then she handed me 4 rolls that were in her words "uncirculated" but both ends were very dirty and just looked like a normal roll. The second one (BOA) I asked for uncirculated 2009 cents said they didnt have any or wheats.. so I just took $5 worth of normal rolls... but how do I get a box or real uncicrulated or a roll of wheat from a bank?
thanks Edited by ImTheCrew 04/02/2009 12:29 am

Well first you have to have an account at a bank in most cases. I just go in and ask for a box of pennies, and they go to the vault and get them. a box is 25 dollars, and a bag is 50 dollars. I have never received any uncirculated ones though, I think it luck of the draw

I don't know of any bank that will hand you a roll of wheat cents. Even if they have them, all the tellers are saving goodies for a friend or relative.

Yeah, you'll need an account at the bank if you want to order boxes of coins from them. Sometimes banks will sell you some rolls even if you don't have an account their, but I've never had such luck. So....yeah. I would suggest getting two to three bank accounts in different banks, making one of those banks your "dump" bank for all the coins you intend to return after you searched them.
All I have to do at my bank is tell them I'm interested in ordering a box of coins. Some banks have a minimum you have to order. Like, if I want to order halves, I have to at least order $1000 of them at a time.
Hope this helps.

wachovia has never asked me if I had an account...even when I asked them to order me a box of halves. I DO have an account with them, but I've never been in that branch to service my account. I go there routinely to pick up boxes of nickels as well. usually, the small denominations, you don't have to pre-order, unless you require a few boxes...

Lots of useful information.
A couple other points of information:
I definitely agree with the "dump" bank.
It helps to butter up the people you are requesting coins from (i.e. cookies, gifts for holidays and such)
*****A point of interest to all roll searchers though. With the current economic situation banks are seeing their earnings depreciating. As a result they are turning to "non-interest income". Basically increasing fees where ever possible. Mostly through overdraft charges and account charges. Some banks are now charging for coin/cash orders and coin/paper deposits. For example a $25 box of pennies may actually cost you $25 plus 10 cents per roll. So off the top it's going to cost $2.50 just to get your box out of the bank before you ever touch a roll.

I wish I could walk into a bank and ask for a roll/box of wheat cents! You can however walk into a grocery store and buy a large box of Wheaties . . .
I bought some boxes at my bank for the first time recently. One thing that doesn't get mentioned too often is the cost of a box. I got a box of cents, nickels, and quarters. Each one had 50 rolls in it so a box of cents = $25, nickels = $100, and quarters =$500. Is a box of halves just 50 of the small 20 coin rolls making them $500 too?
Now hopefully I can find a bank near me with a free coin counter in the lobby. =)

I have been looking for a bank with a free coins counter for the longest time. If I lived up north it would be no problem but finding one in the Houston area seems impossible..

Yes a box of halves is 50 rolls of 20 coins. It already weighs around 25 lbs, so if they used bigger rolls it would be quite difficult to handle.

Huh. I buy coins at two or three different banks that don't even ask if I have an account there. I do dump at my primary bank, because it's a really small branch and the only coin they get is what customers bring in, so my bringing them coin actually saves them having to pay the fee to order it. Me bringing them coin=smiling tellers. I am going to open an account with the local big conglomerate here, ARVEST, because there is an Arvest in every little two bit town around here, and because they never give me any problems about buying coin and have been unfailingly pleasant and friendly.

Combine "that" with not finding any "goodies" when you "do" purchase them and search through them.......the end result could be DEVESTATING for "roll searching activities"......that would put the clamper on it for me anyway !.... ImTheCrew....Quote: you asked...... but how do I get a box of real uncicrulated or a roll of wheats from a bank?
Just ask for the uncirculated rolls......from your bank and sometimes even banks where you don't belong, they'll give you some new rolls of "uncirculated" IF they have them. But "your bank" will sell you, for face value, any rolls they have....."new releases" or otherwise of ANY denomination of coin. This particular year of 2009 for the Cent may be very tough to locate from banks however......some have em'....some don't and won't be getting any...(like mine... ..just depends on where you live !..... However, the answer to your "Wheats" question is........ NEVER ..... Banks do not save "Wheats" or any other Classic coin....you only find Wheats this way by purchasing many rolls of Cents, mixed with all different kinds of dates and conditions, and then spending time searching through them with the hopes of finding some "Wheats" or varieties of some kind. Some even find the occasional " Indian Head cent" ... But all kinds of stuff can turn up if you just keep at it and search through enough of them...... Many "searchers" are luckier than others too !....And that's probably THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT TO BE MADE !.....

Have an account at the bank (Wells Fargo in my case) and keep a seven digit figure on balance. Works every time!

Getting banks to order Unc coins right now is probably getting to be more difficult. Due to the poor economy many people have been cashing in their cans and jugs of change and many banks are swimming in circulated coin. Now it costs the bank money to send those coins back to the Fed. And since they have so much on hand they have no intention of ordering more. (This is probably the reason why people are being told by the banks that they won't be getting any of the new cents. And frankly other than the State Quarters and the President dollars the banks aren't supposed to be able to make specific orders for coins from the Fed. They can order cents but they can't specificly order unc cents or the new cents. If the Fed has circ coins they get sent out first, then Unc coins.)
