This is an 1861 half-dime I had just acquired. Does anyone know anything about the error below the hand?

Welcome to the CCF, Michael!
We'll need to see much better pictures than that for a diagnosis. I suggest using Earle42's method. The ring light is optional if you have alternate sources of illumination, such as indirect sunlight or other types of lighting.

Michael Kinser,

We will need a photo of the reverse and a couple close ups to help you.

To CCF! Could be damage. Better pictures would help.

Those are two gashes, not an error.

They kinda look like gashes in the pics but they arent gashes. Also what about the letters I see between what you see as gashes.i see an A and s G...and there seems to be a silhouette or shadow of what looks a star on a coin above the 18 and next to it the same with what looks like part of a hexagon...

Michael, the pictures are really too blurry to say definitively what the situation is with this. Based on what we do see, it looks like a very well worn dime with post mint damage and/or graffiti. And I do see that A and the X you are referring to, but that doesn't mean it is anything special. Need better pics.
