Hello all,

I have a fairly decent 70-D that is starting tone. Looks nice except for cloudy fields on the obv.

Is there any way to fix that or is that just the way it is?

Thanks!

here's a quick shot of the coin slanted to highlight the most cloudy part of the field

Thanks John. That's what I expected but had to ask. Nice coin aside from the fields. Oh well, onward and upward!

and the cloudy fields detract from eye appeal and the over all grade or might it be ubiquitous for this coin?

they are called 'milk spots' or just 'milking' and can cover a coin. I've tried to find out what causes it, but no luck so far.
And yes, very distracting on proofs. It has to be some kind of oxidation or something.

John,
Milk spots are from a cleaning solution not being washed off of the planchets before striking.

canyonmule,
Your coin does not look like milk spots, some kind of a haze/toning.

They almost all look like this if they're still in the packaging.

Many can be fixed with a nice long soak in 91% isopropyl alcohol.

There are other faster means as well but the alcohol is best and never leaves signs.

Most people don't realize that most of the coins from that era are gone now and the rest are worn out. Mint sets are the chief source but most of these have been destroyed now and most of the survivors contained spotted or tarnished coins. Oftentimes they can not be cleaned. Coins like '68 dimes are always tarnished and only some can be cleaned.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
