Hello Everyone,

Lincoln's neck has stripes, as well as the field leading up to IN. The coin has a lot of high points where bright copper / red show up and brown in other areas.
Also, can someone explain why the tops of letters in IGWT often look smashed into the rim or in this case, the letters are expanded on the top of the letters? I see this a lot in my early 60's coins.

Your knowledge is appreciated, thank you in advance!

I believe that the "stripes" are part of a fingerprint. I often see coins with either a fingerprint that has darkened the coin with its stripes, or (less often) a fingerprint whose oils have protected the coin from elements, leaving the fingerprint brighter than the rest of the coin as it darkens over time.

In my experience, Lincoln cents before 1969 often have the IGWT merged with the rim due to die wear, though in theory any year's cents could have this effect if the coin is worn enough to have the letters and rim appear to merge.

The example you show appears to me to be die wear and not coin wear, however. The letters are too crisp in my opinion to be wear on the coin.

As to the toning difference between light and dark — often it seems to me that a coin was laying against paper, cloth, or wood (like in a drawer) so that it darkened from the close proximity to the source of the darkening agent (whatever might have been in the material that darkened the coin).

And areas with lots of small raised detail, like the word LIBERTY here, impeded airflow and didn't allow a lot of air/oxygen exchange or chemical vapors to circulate, which caused that protected area to not darken as much as the flatter, less-protected areas of the coin.
