Hey there. I found this 1991 Quarter at the beach the other day and thought that I'd post it here for posterity as I think it quite nicely shows the copper leaching, surface discoloration, and pitting that goes with this type of environmental/chemical exposure. Of course I don't know what other indignities this coin has suffered beyond the swim in the ocean nor do I know the length of exposure. Interestingly, it doesn't appear to have lost appreciable mass as it weighs in at 5.69 g.

The gold, Ir, Pl, and oder rare metals can survive. The rest in salt water of ocean or see will be affected. Those waters have other components as aminoacids (mild acids) and in time will react.
