American Numismatic Society - Among the hundreds of civic mints in the Roman imperial provinces, Nicaea in Bithynia stands out for its unusually large output and the variety and originality of reverse designs. Especially from the mid-second century CE, the mint looks much more prolific than that of Nicomedia - Nicaea's historic rival, the provincial capital, and imperial mint from the time of Diocletian. Dario Calomino, Professor at the University of Verona, will present his recent research and discuss different aspects of Nicaea's coinage. He will give an overview of the mint's role, not only in the regional context of Bithynia and Pontus but also in the broader framework of Roman provincial coinage and the imperial policy in the Roman East, especially during the third century CE.
