Online resources seem very confused about pre-1965 mint packaging. As I understand it, the proof sets were issued in cellophane with no stripes, and an octagonal mint identifier. The uncirculated sets were issued in cellophane with a red stripe for Denver, a blue stripe for Philly, and a round mint identifier.

Is this correct?

Yes, that would be correct.
For the proof sets they started the flat cello packaging in 1955 and on that year issued the sets in both a small box and in a flat envelope.

Ok, thanks. People on ebay and elsewhere just seem to use proof and uncirculated interchangeably. Certain years, if you find a full steps nickel in mid/high mint state, you are one lucky cherrypicker.

So what years are these full step nickels worth keeping?

The "plastic" used to enclose each coin for the small box version was not archival. . .See the toning on the Half and Quarter in the photos below. The bundle stapled together is as shipped by USM.

There's such a premium for OGP I haven't pulled the trigger on repackaging the coins into different storage media.

Should I leave them as is ?

That article lists the giant money FS nickels. If you just look at the PCGS price list, they break out Full Steps in the grid. Since uncirculated packaged coins are MS, you have a good shot at a few hundred bucks for many more years than just the unicorns.
