A little history: When we first started we used a MySQL database. Perfectly acceptable for small and medium size tables. But when they start getting large, they bog down. When that happened, we archived topics, which moved them to another table. But that limits their access and searchability. When we realized the forum was really taking off Rui (All hail Rui ) converted us to MSSQL which is VERY robust, and handles even enormous tables very well with indexing. Our MSSQL database right now is over 16GB. So what am I doing now? Archived tables are not needed anymore. The first thing almost every morning, while I'm having my coffee, I spend 30-45 minutes going through archived topics and reviewing them one by one starting with the US modern forums which have the most. Now back then we didn't realize the importance of uploading images here, so people used their own sites or image hosts. But many have long since deleted the images or the host is defunct. These topics are now worthless so I'm just deleting them. Photobucket images that still show with a watermark I can salvage, I open it in a new tab and it's now a clean webp image which I download and re-upload to the post. Any topics that still have meaning are then unarchived back to the main tables for easier access and searchability. Some were in the wrong forum, I'm moving them to the correct forum. So don't be shocked if you get a topic moved email from 2006. Some never had a correct answer posted, so I'm doing it. You may see topics resurrected from many years ago. I did one this morning: http://goccf.com/t/35456This is a massive undertaking, so will take many, many months, maybe even a year.

Here's an example. This is the only image uploaded, lot's of members asking for a better image. Never happened. I just deleted it, it's a waste of space.

Quote: I think I'm glad I don't have a clue what MySQL or MSSQL means Different types of databases. However, MSSQL works much better for large databases. The DB here is around 16GB or so, which would pretty well choke MySQL.
