Two different types of mintmarks on two coins from the same year of minting. I assume this is MDO but I don't have any more information.

The thinner one looks like the normal one and the other looks like maybe a minor RPM? http://varietyvista.com/12%20Kenned...20Styles.htm

It is possible that the 2 MM's were from different MM punches, also one of them could have been hammered in deeper than the other. (These were placed on the dies by hand after all.)

One looks normal and the other ones look like an RPM or a damaged mint mark punch?

I think the piece with the thicker mintmark is a doubled die. When I catch some free time, I will take a better picture.

They are both legal Denver mint marks, just from slightly different eras. The information that you find on sites like Variety Vista is not entirely thorough, as I have discovered while nickel CRH.

http://www.varietyvista.com/04b%20J...20Styles.htm

If you examine the VV guide for Denver nickel mint marks, that fatter, curved punch is a normal mark for the 1964+1968-1969 era.

The 1964 Kennedy half dollar started with the thin, straight back D punch. Possibly it was just a brand new punch engraved specifically for the new 50 cent piece.

However, you can find lots of mint mark crossovers. There are known 1964 nickels punched with the asymmetrical bottom knob 1963-D punch. I have found what I believe to be 1964 nickels punched with the 1964-50c-D thin straight back. So it wouldn't surprise me at all to see a 1969-D Kennedy half punched with a 1964-D nickel punch.

I would definitely save that coin, as people like Fivaz and Stanton occasionally decide that such a variety is worth a boatload of cash.

Just a few weeks ago, when I found the thin D on a 1964-D nickel, I started a huge Denver post-war mint mark infographic. Unfortunately, I hit a point where Adobe Express choked and died, and I can't even load the project anymore. If I eventually figure out the thermal paste heat sink problem on my MacBook, I intend to finish that infographic with all the appropriate material. It was gonna be a cool one.

This is the thread on 1963-D vs. 1964-D nickel mint marks with the mint mark survey:

I found that particular D on a 1964 nickel, although it seems clearly in the style of the 1964-D 50c Kennedy half dollar.

My intention was to show all the Variety Vista mint mark information in parallel, for all denominations simultaneously. I had been working through real images of coins from each year, to show a real mint mark. The grid at the bottom was then intended to show 8 real examples of each mint mark number during the span of years that it was used (ignore the way I formatted it in that particular graphic).
