When I grade my coins, I use the book "Making the Grade" and have the PCGS site open on my computer. I spend a good bit of time on each coin. When I do it that way it takes some time, but I feel good about my grade. I'm not going to spend that time on this coin, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I think it could be either VF details or EF details. Cleaned.

I'll say EF-45, don't think reverse scratch will detail it.

I would go with coin frog's review. I thought that it was not "dirty" enough to be uncleaned.

If it straight graded I'd guess VF35. Probably an XF Details - Cleaned coin though. Worth its silver content plus a small premium.

So how can a person know if coins been cleanded. Apologize for asking to some maybe an obvious question.

i have the coin between XF40 and 45. the coin probably would grade straight however keep in mind that its a common high mintage coin with over 9mm struck. the difference in value at 40 and 45 is negligible.

as for cleaning. its a huge subject to describe cleaned coins. sometimes a quite apparent when there are scratches all going in the same direction and sometimes it more subtle. it takes years of looking at coins if its subtle as there are so many ways that a coin can be cleaned. some are even acceptable at a TPG. your coin may have been treated with something. think about this...the coin had to be in circulation for a long time to bring the grade down to an XF coin. it would conceivably pick up dirt, grime etc from handling over those years.

looking at your coin you don't see any of that between the letters or in the finer recesses of the coin. look at the where the edges of the devices meet the fields. another area on the coin that leads one to a cleaning (albeit a light one) is obverse K10-K3 around the rim. notice the dark spotting. these spots may have had more dirt or grime and when the coin was cleaned it left those botchy areas like something was removed but couldnt remove all of it. these areas can be seen on both sides. my guess is that the coin was dipped or lightly cleaned at some point however probably acceptable and not overly done
