American Numismatic Society - Coinage from Cretan cities has long interested scholars due to the complexity of overstriking, countermarking, and changing the weight standards of the coins. Federico Carbone (University of Salerno) will discuss his research on the monetary practices of one particular city: Phaistos. This project, promoted by the University of Salerno and the Italian Archaeological School at Athens, will investigate the silver and bronze coins from the mid-5th century BCE to the mid-2nd century BCE, reconstructing coin distribution and analyzing die-links to expand our understanding of the minting history of one of the most famous centers of ancient Crete. The coins offer insight not only to how Phaistos functioned locally but also the monetary dynamics beyond the island of Crete.
