Got my usual $20 from the credit union today, and this 1938 nickel was in the customer-wrapped rolls. Pretty sure that is a DDR across the top serifs of E Pluribus Unum. I checked out both Variety Vista and the Wexler catalog on BVC, but I didn't immediately reach any conclusion. There are several WDDR that might be a match.

It's a good break from lines-in-doors modern doubles. If confirmed, it would be my first "true" traditional doubled die found via coin roll hunting (apart from the 1946, which is a distorted hub double with no split serifs).

Thanks, guys. =)

Looks like I have some work with markers today. According to the Wexler files for Philadelphia nickels 1938, there are at least six entries that have that type of doubling on E Pluribus Unum: WDDR-003, WDDR-004, WDDR-009, WDDR-011, WDDR-012, WDDR-015.

Interestingly, I am not seeing a lot of radial die flow, so this might be a relatively early die state. Just with 85 years of circulation wear.

I think these die markers line up pretty well. The die gouge in the semicircular window was really pushing my magnifier resolution. I think the die dot below the L in Liberty is pretty clear, though.

1938 5c WDDR-003 for the win?

I was examining another coin this morning, and I snapped a better pic of the Unum doubling in different lighting. Added to this post for posterity. Hopefully it is more satisfactory than some of the images above with heavy glare.

good sleuthing, you have come up to speed on nickels very quickly

I recall finding a roll's worth of 1939 nickels before I found my first 1938 in circulation

Thanks. =)

That's interesting about the 38/39 split. I would say that I've found them in maybe a 1:2 ratio, but it's a small sample size, and I haven't found many.

Congrats on the find roll hunting.

Your markers seem to confirm this being WDDR-003 like you said.

Nice find and good work getting the confirmation.

I must not have seen a 1938 5c before because that date style looks strange to me, cool though.

The 3 is a very Art Deco style numeral. To my knowledge, the style was only used in 1938 and 1939. By 1943, the style of the 3 had been switched to a rounder, less dramatic numeral.
