Great-Britain-1897-Penny-With-Dot-Between-O-And-N-On-Reverse

This was in a collection I am looking at. I cannot see any mention of it as a variety in my preliminary search of the web/ catalogues. The dot on close examination is raised and quite regular. Have any of you encountered this, and is it of any significance/ value?

Yes, this is a recognised variety, noted in Freeman but without a separate number.
A website specialising in Pennies notes it as "R5" where the R ratings go up to 9. The same coin without the dot is listed as "C2" - so common. The 1897 variety with the high sea level is listed as "R6", so slightly scarcer.
Difficult to assign a value - definitely much more than the standard 1897, but yours does have significant wear. I wouldn't be surprised if it sold for £50 or more.

Thanks, @PaddyB. It is useful to know that it scarce but not so much as the high sea level variety. Worth keeping, but if the owner wants to sell it, probably it would have to be sold in the UK, not Canada.

About right, Paddy. Spink has this listed at £20 in Fine condition, and £100 in Very Fine, so up to £50 with a fair wind.

£100 all day . IN VG they go for around £80 . I wouldn't put much faith in what Spinks price lists its been an age since they had their finger on the values pulse

There are some variety collectors of pennies here on this side of the pond. Listed on ebay you can set up selling to UK, as well as US, and other places, beyond Canada. Or offer on a forum or social media, with understanding buyer covers shipping.

Nice one Oriole, been looking for one for some time, but no luck. I do have the 1946 one dot though,( to be fair its more of a hyphen.)
