Is there a way to differentiate between 67SMS and 67 business strikes? I know the SMS were minted in SF. but what's the difference?

they both look like business strikes. SMS coins will have a mirrored field like a proof would.

HB, Your coin looks like it has a more "squared off" rim than a business strike would. John1

I believe all the SMS coins were minted in San Francisco... Quote: To tell the difference, the SMS coins are glossier, and generally have a much sharper strike. Also, FYI and contrary to what most people believe, ALL SMS coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint. http://goccf.com/t/294921#2521566Remember, all three mints were in use 1965-1967, but mint marks were omitted.

The coin shown in Original Post is not looking "high quality" a strike as an SMS coin. Just a regular business strike as stated above.

You could always send it in to PCGS as a definitive yea or nay in this case. SMS coins are not the easiest varieties to identify without having it in hand. The ones I have seen up close and personal are very crisp looking almost proof like without the mirror surfaces, but hey anything's possible. Good Luck!

Unfortunately I don't Have the money to send a coin out. In searching around I found several articles that state 1967 SMS sets were minted in San Francisco so I stand corrected. Regards all.

Quote: I believe all the SMS coins were minted in San Francisco... That's what I have read. Don't know if any SF coins were released into circulation? I don't think they would just mint 1,836,000 cents in 67 at the SF mint [ the total SMS sets ], then shut the machines down. There were 3,048,000,000 minted at all three mints in 67. Some of the 3 billion had to come from SF. So did they use the SMS dies to produce business strikes after they were done with the SMS sets? The reason they minted coins in all three branches but left off the MM to discourage hording the "new" dime, quarter, and half coins without any silver in them.
