Hi there everyone,

I have what I believe to be a Kai Yuan coin from the Tang Dynasty. It has an odd marking on the reverse -- or is it just a casting flaw? It looks sort of like a tadpole. I've sketched what I think I'm seeing on the paper, as you can see in the photo. I know there are a variety of reverse markings on these, but I can't find this particular one in the Hartill or Schjoth catalogues. Any ideas? Thank you!

I don't think it's a marking, nor a casting flaw - I think it's just a blob of corrosion deposits, just like the blob the same colour that runs from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock.

Yes exactly--looks like an accretion plus Pareidolia to me.

Thank you both Spence and Sap. Pareidolia can be a fun thing. If I look hard enough, I can probably see tadpoles on all my coins.
