Every once in a while, I will run across a stark bluish-silver nickel. They all seem to be 21st century coins, but before the 2006 design change. The difference in color to the average circulated nickels is immediately noticeable. I would have dismissed it as toning, but I have found multiple nickels that are the same specific tone. Also, they do not have the sharp reflectiveness of a freshly struck nickel, more of a muted gleam.

I have four on my desk right now, 2x2000-P, 2003-P, 2004-P. I don't know much about nickel finishes, but I don't think that these years had any unusual Mint-applied changes. Is this just nice toning, maybe alloy tinting, or something else?

I always chalked it up to environmental exposure, annealing, or a slight difference in alloy. If you want to sacrifice one of them for the hobby, a lab could probably tell you if the alloy mix is not the intended 75/25.

I will try to get them under my scope tomorrow. I wonder if it's not VLDS Die Deterioration producing a pleasing luster. The Mint did run those dies into the ground around Y2K.

I'm thinking it's toning from circulation wear and the environment.
