I am not very familiar with British coins. The Royal Mint has a couple of emergency pennies that I am interested in. Both are sold as circulated condition, a Heaton at 16£ and King's Norton at 24£. They each come on a card with some of the history of the time, which I am very interested in, the period leading up to and during WWI. Are they a terrible buy at those prices?

The Royal Mint's prices seem to be high. Unless you really want the card, you can find much better deals on ebay.

@ Hondo Boguss. You're quite right. Royal Mint prices have always been high. If we're not careful ebay sellers will check RM prices and Jack theirs up accordingly.

Hondo is correct, they can be bought on ebay for a fraction of what the mint is selling them for. In circulated condition they are plentiful.

The 1918 amd 1918 KN (Kings Norton) pennies are scarcer, but the 1912, 1918 and 1919 H (Heaton) pennies in Fair to Fine condition are readily available as large numbers of them were pulled from circulation during the run-up to Decimalization in 1965-71 when everyone in the UK was 'checking their change'. I regularly see Heaton Mint pennies in the 25p and £1 'junk' boxes ar my LCS.

This is an example of where The Royal Mint is merely acting as a mass-marketing coin dealer - on-selling coins on the secondary market that it has acquired from other sources, rather than coins it has made itself. You can obtain these exact same coins for much less money, from elsewhere - just without the wrapper.

The marketing tag is also hype: they aren't really "emergency pennies", in terms of being a special issue or special design - they just happen to have been struck during the war. The Mint subcontracted some coinage production out to these two private mints in Birmingham during this period, but that was mainly due to normal production limitations at the London mint, rather than some kind of "emergency" caused by the War; Heaton and Kings Norton struck British coinage at other times, going back to 1860, and both private mints were subcontracted to strike many Colonial coins as well.

It would be the same as if the US Mint started selling worn, circulated random-date Lincoln wheat cents for $30 each, when you can buy similar coins on ebay or from coin dealers for $30 a roll.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Thank you all for the responses and information. My dad had an interest in the WWI era that I picked up on and I thought it would be cool to get these examples of British wartime coinage.
