Is it worth collecting AU State Quarters out of circulation. I have completed 2 full albums but I can't help help hoarding every State Quarter I get in change.Anyone else doing that? and is it worth it.

I started hoarding them back in 1999/2000 and actually was taking $20 bills to car washes with coffee cans to get as many State Quarters as possible. People thought I was nuts. I also had several thousand dollars of OBW rolls which I now regret cracking open as the Georgia rolls have sky rocketed.

Due to the mass quantity of each coin that have been minted I personally don't see a premium on circulated coins but that's just my 2 cents. You may however acquire errors though circulation and the thrill of finding coins you collect is also exhilirating.

Good luck.

Well...it's not like you've paid extra, such as forking over $$$$ for the Gold-plate Presentation Set in a Walnut Case for 50 easy installments of $25.

Imo, the way these coins are being hoarded, there should be no problem getting avg MS coins for the next 200 years.

WBB..sounds like you are loving collecting and you should follow
your heart on this... Forum members all go thru stages and get addicted
to certain types and series..right now enjoy your State Quarter trip
...you can always cash them in and start collecting other stuff
Circulated State Quarters will take decades before they are worth more than face value; that being said, there are many State Quarter errors that would add value even to your circulated collection. Maybe it's time for you to take it to the next level?!

PS The beauty of collecting State Quarters is that you don't pay more than face value for them..you take them right out of circulation
--plus you learn a lot about American history...enjoy!

Collecting coins is about finding a series that appeals to you and having tons of fun adding a new one or an upgrade to your set. Have fun with the State Quarters and then move on to something else. Plucking them out of circulation is actually pretty fun. There are many of these that still have plenty of mint luster remaining. Once you find a nicer one, pull the other one from your set and add that one.

I like making the sets and then giving them away as gifts. My sister loved hers. I made one for myself and am also in the process of making one for my daughter for her birthday present or Christmas gift this year. I do all BU in the albums and spend anything less than that.

Nothing wrong with making "circulated Sets" of the State Qtrs.....
But I wouldn't get carried away with "hoarding every single AU State Qtr. that you come across in change".....that would be an unnecessary overkill IMHO.

Thank You Gentleman for the great advise. I like IrishRadier's idea - I think I will put a couple of sets together for my kids and cash the rest in for more coins :) . Thanks Guys.
