Has anyone seen this before? It appears to be the rim of the quarter struck on the coin. I've been going through a bag of old silver quarters and spotted this.

Reed mark, PMD. Just damage. Still worth silver melt value.

That concept confuses me. I've looked into reeding, I suppose with no clear way to prove it happened in the minting or striking process it's hard to make sense of. I just thought somehow whatever pressed or sheared the edges clipped the face of the coin and therefore it was considered and error coin.

@nic, it may or may not be due to a strike from the edge of another coin, but it nevertheless it is mechanical damage if some sort or another. We can tell this with good certainty because it is the most likely thing to have happened. Perhaps a short reeded piece of metal got into the press with this planchet and the two were struck together but that other piece fell of subsequently, but this happened very rarely.

Also, in thought it was interesting that those marks carry almost to the right side edge of the coin. (Which is not quite visible in the compressed uploaded photo)

I think it's **possible** this is struck through detached reeding since reeding contact marks are rarely that long and straight. Not likely though, since the chances are very slim an error like that would get that circulated.

I think it is too well circulated to be sure of anything.

What does the reverse look like? The reeding does look interesting but my initial thought.... could it be replicated utilizing a vise?

Better, clear photos would help. Obverse and reverse, close-up of the area in question. I see what looks like pushed metal around the 9 in the date. Also, some damage/heavy scratch between the B & E of Liberty, down through the back of the hair, then comes under the ear across the neck. I'm really curious to see what the reverse looks like.
