Below is the text of a letter I sent to U.S. Mint Director Gibson:

11/19/23

Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson
United States Mint Headquarters
801 9th Street, NW
Washington, DC 20220-0012

Dear Ms. Gibson,

I am writing in concern about the U.S. Mint's Presidential Silver Medals program. At the current rate of production and distribution, the silver medal honoring Theodore Roosevelt will be issued in 2025.

This will mark the first time that the program will offer a silver medal of a president that has already been honored with a silver medal produced via a U.S. Mint Coin and Chronicles set. A silver medal of Theodore Roosevelt was included with the Coin and Chronicles set in 2013.

The purchasers of the 2013 Coin and Chronicles set were thrilled to receive the limited-edition silver medal of Theodore Roosevelt, so it will be disappointing when the same silver medal is issued in 2025 as part of the current Presidential Silver Medals program.

Other presidents who have been honored with silver medals in the Coin and Chronicles sets include Franklin D. Roosevelt (2014), Harry S. Truman (2015), Dwight D. Eisenhower (2015), John F. Kennedy (2015), Lyndon B. Johnson (2015) and George H.W. Bush (2021). The George Herbert Walker Bush Coin and Chronicles set is still available through the U.S. Mint catalog, with the description stating, "The Bush $1 Reverse Proof Coin and Silver Presidential Medal are only available in this set!"

Consequently, I am asking if it is possible for the U.S. Mint to slightly alter the designs in its current Presidential Silver Medals program for Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and George H.W. Bush. Perhaps a mint mark or privy mark could be added to these specific medals, in order to distinguish them from the medals previously issued in the Coin and Chronicles sets.

Thank you for your consideration.

Excellent suggestions, Captain Rich! Hopefully your letter will effect change in the designs of these medals.

A reasonable suggestion captainrich.

Just for context,,,the enthusiastic reception the medals received as part of the Coin & Chronicles Sets was a factor in the Mint deciding to move forward with its silver Presidential medal series.

I fully support this idea!

Mostly because it will give me a reason to buy another Ike medal.

I do have two of the 2015 medals. One in my C&C OGP set, the other in a PCGS holder (along with a PCGS reverse proof dollar from the C&C set).

So do I get some kind of credit for this? Coin World reports that the upcoming Roosevelt silver medal will have a matte finish, differentiating it from the proof finish in the 2013 Coin and Chronicles set. Kudos to the U.S. Mint.

Wait. The 2013 and all other C&C medals were uncirculated strikes, not proof.

I do not think the matte finish is different enough from what I already consider a matte finish since they were not brilliant uncirculated.

Maybe they botched the article and meant to say the 2025 medal will be proof?

My only graded C&C medal. Not a proof. Looks matte.

I bought this later. I still have my original Ike medal in the OGP along with all my others. All my C&C silver medals have this same finish.

You are right, jbuck, NGC and PCGS grade the 2013 silver medals as Mint State uncirculated. I think we need some clarification from the U.S. Mint or Coin World.

I still hope the new Roosevelt medals are different in some way from the Coin and Chronicles sets.

Yes, and also for FDR, Truman, Ike, JFK, LBJ, and Bush 41.

No, I did not forge Reagan, his C&C had an ASE instead of a silver medal.

I just sent an email to Paul Gilkes at Coin World, asking for clarification on his article.

Mr. Gilkes has already responded to my email:

Unless the Mint wants to answer my questions, we will just have to wait and see what the Mint releases.
