Is it safe to assume that there are AU examples of the 1958 DDO penny out in circulation waiting to be discovered? Isn't it also safe to assume that an AU example would look a lot different than a mint state example? Wouldn't the doubling be harder to see in a more worn down coin?

The doubling on an AU coin is going to look just like MS coin very little differences. Just a little more ware or flattening. You have to remember it's the same set of dies that create these coins.

Here's a link to 1958 P FS-101, DDO-001

Not really. After 65 years there's not really much of a chance but sellers of 1958 BU rolls would argue otherwise.

No, for the reasons given by 16609.

Not on the variety you specifically mention.
It depends on how "worn down" the specimen was, but the separation is so strong on 1958 P DD)-001 it should be legible. Even a Coin Wrapping Machine wouldn't be able to remove all the separation unless it scraped the entire perimeter down to the fields.

ps. Since your questions in this thread seem to be about the 1958 P DDO-001 Wheat cent it would have been a good idea to put that info in the title so it can be found by the search engines for other collectors with similar questions.

It wouldn't be much of a difference. According to doubleddie.com, only 3 specimens exist, so it's highly unlikely that there's AU specimens out there.

There is no way with the spread on the 58 DD that you could miss it in any condition.
