I happened upon this while practicing macro photography. Check out the "T" on the front. There is a clear, raised, horizontal ridge above the letter which itself looks shorter because it. What can you make of it?

Looks like Split Copper Plating with maybe zinc rot setting in.

Yes exactly, the hole in the copper plating has exposed the underlying zinc core, which has now started to deteriorate.

For my learning process and to help me ID this kind of damage in the future, can you point out for me where the hole is? On the coin itself I can't see anything and the ridge is firm. Other than that...are these photos of a quality that is preferred on the forum?

It does appear to be a plating issue. As to the hole,I might be seeing a bit of zinc showing on the right side of the anomaly.Pics are fine, maybe a bit better focus.

Looks like a T with a halo - interesting result. Only comment on the photography is that it appears the coin was not level, so the focus is off a bit in the upper right of the first two pictures. I am by no means a photography expert as most of my pictures are not works of art, so only guessing that the lens is hyper critical so a small distance difference due to the tilt is causing the slight blur. What hardware did you use?

Nothing special. Rebel DSLR with standard macro lens. I agree on the focus and angle which I suspected being more of an issue when magnified but I knew it was going to happen. It was intentional at the time to remove glare caught from being straight on. This was done by hand as well. If I get the time to use my photo booth I can set up proper lighting, Fix the camera, and shoot straight on for better focus.

Was really curious if this were something to examine further. Thanks so far guys I am learning a lot.

These zoomed in photos reveal what looks like a bridge between the T and the halo bulge. Just so weird.

Agree, most likely a plating bubble.
