I'm new to coin collecting and have realized I have made a mistake. I have been storing some silver coins and lincoln cents in a coin folder that was advertised as non pvc (for a few months) until today. One of the wheat cents has already began corroding. After some research, it was clear I had be had. Everything will be moved to to Coretek 2x2 flips when I receive them.

My question is, has the damage been done? Should I expect continued corrosion of the wheat cents? Should I expect years down the road the silver coins (quarters, Mercury dimes, etc) to become green? If so, what can I do to remedy the situation?

Thank you

to the CCF, Cmorel! Fortunately you caught this in time. Soak your coins in pure acetone, then rinse them again individually when you take them out of the soak container. This will remove any PVC-related chemicals from them, and your problem will be solved.
Do a Forum search on acetone and you'll get more hits than you can imagine.

To CCF! Hondo Boguss has a great answer. Just make sure you do it correctly.

Any chance you can post a picture of the Wheat cent? I'm just curious about what it looks like with the pvc on it.

My entire collection of about 2,000 coins is stored / displayed in cardboard Mylar 2x2's in archival quality album pages made from Mylar or polypropylene.
Discarded soft clear PVC album pages a very long time ago.

@ Cmorel Just follow Hondo Boguss's advice and all should be "good to go".
