Hi again.
Most of my growing collection of ancients lack clarity. How does one go about applying a grade?
This Claudius II AE Antoninianus is the odd one out for me in that it actually has a face of sorts.
The reverse of Jupiter holding a thunderbolt and scepter is not as clear, relatively speaking. The seller says the mint was Rome, but I don't know how that was surmised.
So how would you learned collectors classify this coin?

Rome Claudius II (268-270AD) AE Antoninianus
18mm 2.72g RIC 54 Jupiter holding thunderbolt and scepter
IMP C CLAVDIVS PF AVG/ IOVI VICTORI

Very unhappy with the way NGC grades their ancients.
'strike and 'surface' as the only two factors that contribute to the grade of an ancient coin just don't cut it for me.

An ancient coin is as individual as people are.
As a result, the grading of an ancient coin is a very complex business, with many variable factors that contribute to a grade inter react with each other.

Perhaps explains why other third party grading companies do not attempt to get into the business of grading ancient coins

Anyone who is interested in attempting to grade an ancient coin would do well to read what Forum Ancient Coins has to say on the matter.

That should not stop any collector from attempting to grade ancient coins for themselves. In fact, the opposite is true, and to seriously do so is the best way to learn. Lots of experience is your best ally, and I am still learning after a numisamatic lifetime.
