So I spotted a cool
Kennedy half on
ebay for five bucks. Loads of doubling on IGWT, LIB, the lips. But I have been immediately stymied by the series doubling as described in the Wexler catalog:
Quote: Significant changes have been made to the 1966
Kennedy half dollar obverse doubled die listings due to the discovery of three different obverse doubled working hubs.
Quote:
While CONECA has noted the possibility of a doubled working hub for the numerous 1966 50¢ doubled profile varieties, they still list all of these as unique working dies.
So while Wexler has basically three doubled hubs and only two
DDO entries for 1966 SMS
Kennedy half dollars, Variety Vista lists 18
DDO varieties. To make matters more confusing, there are six CPG cherries (FS-101 thru 106) for 1966 SMS 50c. According to PCGS, the value for FS-102 thru 106 can be 4-10x a typical 1966 SMS silver half.
How do you sort out the series and hub doubling against the valuable die doubling? It's confusing because you could be looking at a coin with two types of doubling simultaneously.
