Hello everyone,

I don't find many American gold eagles in Rome. I was offered this 1986 at spot.

There is no x ray option here. Assuming weight and diameter anything concerning about this one?

Thanks!

If the weight and dimensions are correct I would have no concerns with it.

I don't see any obvious signs concerning authenticity.

I use weight, appearance and pinging. Coin looks good. Fakes often have a problem with the olive branches reaching far enough into the stars.

The weight is a touch above nominal and likely a measurement error. If the thickness is normal you are fine. You probably know these are 22k, 91.67% gold. I would have no concerns if a buyer of this piece.

I have some general reservations about buying full ounce coins in Rome. I think I prefer to buy in the U.S. I don't know . . . I have bought some Kruggerands and quarter ouce eagles, a few soverigns, and those I felt much more comfortable with. The shop also isn't the most comfortable for buying. In hand, the coin had a few pin hole sized marks in the planchette and I probably just wasn't in the mood.
I may think about it over the holiday. There was also A LOT going on in my non-coin-world-life today . . . so I'd rather think on it. But thank you all for your reassurances.

That weight would make me want to check my scale with my other coins and also check thickness.

It looks good. If dia and weight are good and you trust the seller I see no problem with it. Usually the fakes don't have crisp details like this coin does.
