Seems to me you have 3 choices - Open the roll and know what's there, keep it and wonder what's there or sell it and never know what's there. You aren't going to find a Goodacre Presentation dollar or Cheerio dollar but you could find a wounded eagle or a high grade coin or two.

Keep the roll intact so that the wondering gnaws at you forever! But seriously, there are not that many varieties to search for. If it were mine, the roll would stay intact.

Chances are that you will not find a wounded eagle or Cheerios dollar in the roll. What you will find is a bunch of spotted and damaged dollars even deep within the roll. I say sell it and let someone else do a treasure hunt. I already opened two rolls and the coins looked terrible.

http://goccf.com/t/457403#3965725Paid the lady $28 for the roll. Her husband had been a major coin collector and dealer, had a shop with a bank vault helicoptered in at night while it was being built back in the 70's. He passed not long ago and she has been dragging stuff out of that vault and running a firesale, and everybody has been stopping by to see what she drags out next. I stop by a couple times a week and usually can't get out the door without my wallet losing some weight. I wouldn't usually pay that over face, but something about the intact roll appealed to me, that no one has touched those coins or looked at them since leaving the mint nearly a quarter century ago. If that doesn't make you feel old....

You may have paid a little over face value but a roll of new "gold" dollars straight from the mint costs $34.50, almost $10 over face. So you came out ahead!

I figure I owe it to you folks to inform you that the kid in me had to open the wrapped present sitting there, making me sweat if I looked at it too long. So, what did I find? 25 perfectly minted golden dollars. It occurs to me that these poor mint employees, just doing their jobs correctly, and we are disappointed NOT finding a defective product. Poor little mint workers....

DanFielding thank you for that info about the original price. I actually feel better knowing that. I'm usually hard to get over on but I wanted that roll and was feeling foolish for what I paid!

I can almost guarantee that if you open the roll, you will only find 25 ordinary sacagawea coins that you could easily find in circulation. It will remain far more interesting if you keep the roll intact.
