Hi there, wasn't sure where to post this so thought I'd start a topic ! Recently I came across a £2 that I don't believe I have personally seen before so I did a little research and discovered that the coin is of padding station which I believe is not a rare coin but after looking closer I realised that the dots around the queens head are not even(misaligned?) I don't know if there are any others errors or how to spot them, one coin I came across online said the writing on the side was upside down but I don't know how to know if mine is the same? If anyone has any more information on how rare this may be or what else to look for on this coin and maybe a value? I've seen all different amounts and all different errors online so not sure what to believe to be honest?
Unfortunately it's another case of "don't believe what you see on ebay" or other unpoliced selling platforms.
Firstly, there is no such thing as "upside down edges" in modern coinage. The manufacturing process means that roughly 50% will be one way up, and the rest the other. As to the uneven dots - The Royal Mint's quality control has declined enormously. Almost any of the two tone coins (£2 and £1) will have variations in the size of the dots. That doesn't stop online sellers from trying to make a quick buck by selling them as "error" coins. The other common scam is to claim that the insert is upside down, twisted, or the wrong one for the date. All these are impossible in the manufacturing process and have been achieved by unscrupulous sellers punching the centre disc out and replacing it incorrectly.
There are rarer variations around - having the wrong edge lettering for the coin design occurs occasionally, but again be aware of fakes.
Thank you for the reply Paddy, I found this coin in some change I received so doesn't matter to me if it's worth anything to be honest it's just something I hadn't noticed before! Do you think it would be worth anything to any collectors or am I just better off spending it? I'm not looking to make easy money just wondering if it is of interest to any collectors to be honest.
You are welcome to try, but I think it very unlikely anyone would give you more than face value for it. I would just spend it. If the condition was a lot better, it might have got a little more interest.
