A while ago I acquired a 1844 crown with star stops. When entering it into my collection I measured it's diameter which was 38.0mm. This got me worried as Numista lists the diameter as 38.6mm. Allcoinvalues https://www.allcoinvalues.com/unite...l-stops.html however lists the diameter as 38mm. Can anyone confirm what the diameter should be? Thanks

I can find no book with a diameter mentioned in my collection - ESC, Spink catalogue, Krause. My 1844 star stops measures exactly 38mm and I am pretty confident it is genuine. Weight of 28.22g may be another check if you are in doubt?

Check and compare diameter against known genuine. That way, you don't have to know the diameter, but vernier caliper may be useful.

Thanks for that ttkoo. Interesting that the book you quote still has the 1845 Star stops listed. The 2018 Spink "Coins of England" dropped this variety, and I believe it has been left out ever since. The older ESC also lists it, but a discussion on another forum highlighted that no one seemed to be able to come up with an example, despite being listed as "Common". I spent several years trying to get one on ebay and elsewhere, without success. Many times they were listed as Star stops, but when one examined the pictures, they were cinquefoil instead. I think many vendors simply did not know the difference. Has anyone here an example to post? 1844 Star stops is easy enough, but I would love to see a genuine 1845 Star stops.

Interesting. I thought all British crowns post-1816 were 38.61mm. I'm away from home so cannot compare my own 1844 crown ro one of another date.

I'm not sure how accurate these quotes diameters and mass are.

1844 'pattern' strike is listed as 38mm on an example for sale by Wessex, but Chards has it at 38.61mm
1844 'regular' strikes 38.61mm (Heritage Auctions, Spinks, Chards)
1845 38.61mm (PCGS)
Lacking a spare £100-£300 with which to purchase an example of any, I've naught else to go by.
I did see several listed as '38mm' but perhaps this is lazy rounding (I also saw a few listings at 39mm)
